Welcome to the TAOISM-STUDIES-L electronic forum
on [email protected]
This Forum was established by the Research School of Social Sciences,
ANU to provide a world-wide communications vehicle and a central
electronic archive for anyone working on, or interested in the
scholarly study of the Taoism, Taoist practices and traditions as well
as relevant aspects of other Asian religions.
The Forum begins operation without a moderator and is open to all,
subject to subscription approval by the Listowner (see below).
*** PLEASE NOTE ***
Participants are requested to disable any message-confirmation option
on their mailing software, so that no spurious RCPT messages are
generated & sent back to the mailing list. Those who do not comply
with this technical requirement may find that their access to this
electronic agora is suspended for as long as the problem with their
mailers is not satisfactorily resolved.
*** PLEASE DISABLE MESSAGE-CONFIRMATION SOFTWARE NOW ***
The Forum was established on the 17 April 1994 by the Coombs Computing
Unit, Research Schools of Social Sciences & Pacific and Asian Studies,
The Australian National University as a replacement for an earlier
open-access and un-moderated forum 'Taoism-L' (active 30 Jul 93 - 17 Apr
94).
Participants are free to join and leave the Forum at any time. All
participants will be expected to maintain a coherent, crisp and
courteous style of communication. Those who do not may be asked to
leave the list.
English is the preferred language of communication of this Forum.
CONTRIBUTIONS by forum members should be sent to:
[email protected]
To contribute, you must have subscribed and been approved as a member
of the list of contributors. Approval to join the Forum is a 'pro
forma' operation, but subscription does permit some basic control of
the contents of submissions by the list owner. Any submission to the
forum is immediately broadcast to all subscribed members, and a copy
automatically archived.
Anyone, whether a registered member or not, can electronically view
and retrieve the communications to the forum using a database
'ANU-Taoism-Studies-L' accessible through the standard WAIS software
and through the ANU's COOMBSQUEST Social Sciences and Humanities
Information Facility gopher running on the coombs.anu.edu.au as well
as on the cheops.anu.edu.au machines.
INITIAL COMMUNICATION:
It will be helpful for all members of the Forum to provide a brief
introductory note, as their first communication with the Forum: Who
are you, your institution or affiliation, your general and specific
interests in Taoism research. Such note should be labelled in the
subject line: 'M.Y. Surname biographical details' (eg, A.B. Charles
biographical details),
Most email systems permit the appending of a signature block to a
message; please use one if possible.
SUBJECT HEADINGS:
Stick to keywords. Most email systems
cannot list more than a few words of subject text, so put the most
informative words first.
CONTRIBUTION TEXT:
If you are reporting findings or research results, treat the text as
if it were a short note/abstract to professional journal.
Please make questions and queries for specific information short and
to the point; ask the question first, then go into detail to provide
the background or context of the query.
Factual discussion of matters raised in any communication is
encouraged; however, if the response is of a personal nature, then a
direct reply not using the Forum is probably a better tactic.
Bibliographic information is always welcome and such contributions, if
submitted, will be archived on in the Coombspapers Social Sciences
Research Data Bank at ANU available by ftp/gopher access on the
coombs.anu.edu.au (port 70) system.
