COURSE CONTENT:
As this is an introductory course, we will survey a wide range of material including the following:
·the evaluation of the methodological problems and possibilities represented by each approach; and,
·the contributions of several psychologists of religion, including: James, Freud, Jung, Erikson, and others.

REQUIREMENTS:
The course will be evaluated on the basis of three projects and attendance. The projects include:
·A 2000 word essay pertinent to one aspect of the course material. Due date: March 6, 1992. There will be no extensions and no acceptance of hand written papers (40%);
·A two hour examination consisting of two parts (a) a series of short answers and (b) two essay questions not related to the student's term paper topic (45%); and
·Attendance (5%).

COURSE CONTENT:
The title of the course is fairly explicit. We will investigate the psychological approaches to the study of religion as found in the writings of Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung and William James. With each we will investigate their "style" of approach, how this approach is related to their cultural and familial background and how each thinker's approach relates to the others.
