How to help a loved one with their administrative procedures?
The point of view of Marcel Rufo, child psychiatrist
It is in your cousins’ interest to contact the hospital department which established the initial diagnosis. These professionals are able to determine Paul’s level of disability. There are thresholds which set the subsidies allocated to a person with a disability, with a limit of 80% depending on what the organic disorders cause.
An invisible illness makes assessment less easy for doctors than when the disability is linked to a physical injury, for example. How can we take into account the fatigue which poses the problem of Paul’s socio-professional integration, or his difficulty in committing to a relationship and a fatherhood project for fear of transmitting his illness?
Involving him in these procedures is important, to prevent him from being passive and so that “the invalid is valid” in some way. From his parents, there is a complaint, a depressive note, especially since it is perhaps they who transmitted this genetic disease. They would benefit from considering psychological support at their level. But the fact that you are aware is already a good thing. When they tell you about their efforts, being optimistic will only help them.
