3. “This New Year who has never arrived”, by Bogdan Mureşanu

Dramatic comedy, 2:18 am, at the cinema on April 30, 2025.

The director of this feature film was barely 15 years old in December 1989. His native country, Romania, was then on the verge of the revolution of which he remembers today as a “real miracle”.

It is in this special atmosphere, a few days before the fall of Nicolae Ceaușescu, that the filmmaker places the action of his film, crossing the fate of several characters. Students, father, actress, lonely elderly woman, scrupulous state agent or public television employees: everyone takes part in the situation with their own weapons.

“In a dictatorship, fear and suspicion transform society into an archipelago of tiny and closed islands. Citizens get used to double language, to whisper, to pretend and to walk on eggs when they are dealing with someone who has power,” confided the director who received the Orizzonti Grand Prix at the last Venice Festival for this intriguing fiction.
