Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John*
Maundy Thursday – Celebration in memory of the Lord’s Supper
Before the feast of the Passover, knowing that the hour had come for him to pass from this world to his Father, Jesus, having loved his own who were in the world, loved them to the end. During the meal, when the devil has already put in the heart of Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, the intention of betraying him, Jesus, knowing that the Father has given everything into his hands, that he has come out of God and is going towards God, gets up from the table, puts down his garment, and takes a cloth which he ties around his belt; then he pours water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet and wipe them with the cloth from his belt. So he comes to Simon Peter, who says to him: “Is it you, Lord, who wash my feet? » Jesus answered him: “What I want to do, you do not know now; later you will understand. » Peter said to him: “You shall not wash my feet; no, never! » Jesus answered him: “If I do not wash you, you will have no part with me. » Simon Peter said to him: “So, Lord, not only the feet, but also the hands and the head! » Jesus said to him: “When you have just taken a bath, you do not need to wash yourself except your feet: you are completely pure. You yourselves are pure, but not all. » He knew well who was going to deliver him; and that is why he said: “You are not all pure. » When he had washed their feet, he took back his garment, sat down again and said to them: “Do you understand what I have just done for you? You call me “Master” and “Lord”, and you are right, because truly I am. If then I, the Lord and the Master, have washed your feet, you also must wash one another’s feet. This is an example that I gave you so that you too may do as I have done for you. »
