Saint Augustine was born on November 13, 354 in Thagaste (an ancient Numidian city in Algeria). He was raised by a Christian mother, the future Saint Monica, and an atheist father who did not prevent the mother from giving the children a Christian education.

A brilliant student, he left for Milan to teach rhetoric in 384. It was also in this Italian city that he converted to Christianity. He was baptized by Saint Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, in 387.
