The Gospel of the Mass of January 25, 2026

Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew*

When Jesus learned of the arrest of John the Baptist, he withdrew to Galilee.

He left Nazareth and came to live in Capernaum, a city located on the Sea of Galilee, in the territories of Zebulun and Naphtali. This was to fulfill the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the highway of the sea and the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations! The people who dwelt in darkness have seen a great light. On those who dwelt in the land and the shadow of death a light has arisen. » From that moment, Jesus began to proclaim: “Repent, for the kingdom of Heaven is at hand. »

As he walked along the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting their nets into the sea; because they were fishermen. Jesus said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men. » Immediately, leaving their nets, they followed him. From there he went forward and saw two other brothers, James, son of Zebedee, and his brother John, who were in the boat with their father, mending their nets. He called them. Immediately, leaving the boat and their father, they followed him. Jesus traveled throughout Galilee; he taught in their synagogues, proclaimed the Gospel of the Kingdom, healed every disease and every infirmity among the people.
