The Seven Buddha Postures
In fact, there are 7 different poses representing the 7 days of the week. Each of them has a certain meaning and represents different character traits.
The different postures of Buddha statues and their meaning
Each of them represents a day of the week, and you must respect the statue representing the day of your birth.
- Sunday Buddha – Pang Thawai Net
- Monday Buddha – Pang Ham Yati
- Tuesday Buddha – Pang Sai Yat
- Wednesday Buddha – Pang Umbat
- Thursday Buddha – Pang Samti
- Friday Buddha – Pang Ram Pueng
- Saturday Buddha – Pang Nak Prok
If you have visited a temple (or “Wat”) in Thailand, you may have noticed that the Buddha appears there in a standing, seated or reclining position. In some temples you will even see seven (sometimes eight) Buddha statues lined up next to each other, often with a donation cup in front of them.
What does that mean ? Many people see these images without really knowing what they mean or what they are used for.
There are of course many more than seven Buddha postures, and during our research we found different versions and explanations. Here is a summary:
1. Sunday Buddha – Pang Thawai Net
The Sunday Buddha, Pang Thawai Net, translates to “Seven Day Gaze”. This posture consists of a standing Buddha, crossed in front, the right hand always covering the left hand.
It depicts when Buddha achieved enlightenment after standing for seven consecutive days before a bodhi tree without blinking.

2. Monday Buddha – Pang Ham Yati
The Monday Buddha stands with his right hand raised to shoulder height, palm facing outward. It depicts Buddha calming his family members after returning from paradise, three months after they argued over the waters flowing through their respective lands. Buddha managed to persuade them to compromise.

3. Tuesday Buddha – Pang Sai Yat
The Tuesday Buddha is depicted in a pose in which he is lying on his right sidehead resting on his right arm and toes perfectly parallel to each other.
The image depicts Buddha making himself taller than the evil Asura Rahu in a prone position in order to lower Asura Rahu’s pride. Seeing the magnitude of the Buddha in this relaxed posture, Asura Rahu succumbed to the Buddha and accepted his teachings.

4. Wednesday Buddha – Pang Umbat
The Wednesday Buddha stands with both hands wrapped around an alms bowl. The statue symbolizes caring for others. While many initially believed the statue depicted a “mendicant” Buddha, this is in fact not the case. It is rather a Buddha who collects alms from others, which allows them to acquire merit (ie good karma). The Thursday Buddha is often called the Meditating Buddha. He is depicted in a seated position, his hands resting on his knees. The story goes that after receiving bundles of grass, Buddha scattered them and sat on top making a vow to remain seated until he attained complete enlightenment. It was thanks to his unwavering determination that he succeeded.

Saturday Buddha – Pang Nak Prok
The Saturday Buddha is depicted in the lotus position, in full meditation, under the protection of the Naga Muchalinda. This pose is said to reflect the time after enlightenment, when King Naga protected a meditating Buddha from heavy rain by using his multi-headed hood to shelter him, while lifting him above the waters of raw with his body.
