What the Bible says
Violence and war are omnipresent in the Old Testament. To put an end to the destructive spiral of blind revenge, the law of Talion – “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth” – is formulated several times (in the books of Exodus, Leviticus and Deuteronomy) to try to bring about a return to balance.
But in his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus Christ turns this response to violence upside down: “You have heard that it was said: ‘an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ Well ! I tell you not to retaliate against the wicked; but if someone slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him.○” (Mt 5:38-39). With this unexpected teaching, Christ does not propose a narrow return to balance, but a demanding path to peace.
