Love obliges

Dominique Langjournalist at Pilgrim and assumnist religious:

In the Gospel of John, the last meal of Jesus is heavy with an immense spiritual heritage. The Eucharist herself is barely mentioned there. Or, to put it more precisely, it is deployed there in all its consequences.

When Jesus prepares his disciples for the gift of his life on the cross – “this is my body and my blood” – he also sends them already in their mission of apostles of the resurrection: living from this unconditional, radical, sometimes crucifying love. To the point of making it a command not to force us to love, which would be a complete contradiction, but to remind us that on this point we cannot give up if we want to be his disciples.

After all, Jesus himself experiences the glory of God when one of his friends, Judas, betrays him. A glory not in betrayal but in a love that goes beyond ruptures, failures, betrayals. A love, therefore, which saves us for good.
