Movie theater. “Cabrini”, the moving portrait of a missionary serving the most deprived

“The world is too small for what I intend to do,” Sister Francesca Cabrini often exclaimed, wearing a broad smile. Too little known to the general public, this woman of heart and strength created sixty-seven hospitals, orphanages and schools in the United States. Canonized in 1946, she bears the title of patron saint of immigrants.

In this biopic which pays homage to him, Mexican director Alejandro Monteverde (Sound of freedom) traces the youthful years of this fascinating personality. The viewer easily lets himself be carried away in the adventure of Cabrini who, with papal authorization and accompanied by six other missionary sisters, left her native Italy in 1889. When they landed in the mists of New York, the nuns had a precise objective: to found an orphanage for street children, most of them of Italian origin.

Without any support on American soil and armed only with their will, these women of faith and action are gradually building what they call an “empire of hope”. Cabrini will fight against all odds to accomplish his work for the most deprived. Later, she founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a religious institute helping Italian immigrants arriving in America. A moving portrait to discover without hesitation.
