Notre-Dame des Oiseaux
Among the indirect victims of the fire of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, there is also a couple of birds. These are crecerel hawks (Falco tinnunculus) whose nesting on the cathedral had been followed for several years. In a less urban universe, these birds normally like to nest in rock walls. But some have adapted to the cavities created by modern buildings.
In the 1990s, up to three or four different nestos had been counted on the religious building. A few days before the drama of April 15, 2019, a couple of these raptors were still preparing to settle. But the fire decided otherwise. As early as 2022, however, a new nesting took place in a pinnacle behind the North Tower. Like a parable of life that always comes up.
The League for the Protection of Birds now works with the public establishment which follows the current restoration to integrate the care of biodiversity in the fittings. So that the species observed here in the past can also come back: black martinet, starboard star, choucas of the towers, tichodrome lake. Or even a cousin of the raptors mentioned here, already observed in 2017 and which is essential in this site. Since it is of course the hawk … pilgrim (Falco peregrinus).
