Our 3 tips for taking care of your household appliances
1. The washing machine
Contrary to appearances, it is a sensitive and delicate machine. Loads of laundry that are too heavy can, in the long term, “damage the drum axle, the bearings, or even the electronic card” (Ademe). Leave a hand’s width between the drum and the clothes.
Mold, dirt, limescale can also shorten its lifespan. Once a month, give it a thorough cleaning: run the detergent drawer with lukewarm water, inspect the drain filter and clean the door seal. Complete this treatment by running a cycle at high temperature (60 or 90°C) empty.
2. The dishwasher
It washes, of course, but also needs regular small washes. Starting with the filter at the bottom of the tank. At least once a month, unclip it and remove residue with a used toothbrush, then rinse with warm water and reposition it. The same goes for the washing arms, which spray water under pressure. Only use a wooden object, such as a toothpick, to unclog the holes.
Finally, to eliminate scale deposits, wash the appliance several times a year with a suitable cleaning product. Be careful with white vinegar, which can damage the seals, which are valuable for ensuring the watertightness of the tank.
3. The vacuum cleaner
Even if he dazzles you with his efficiency, you should not ask too much of him. Plaster dust, ashes, sand, liquids, cocoa powder, flour, pieces of glass or ceramic will damage its motor because it cannot be retained by the filters. Empty his bag before it is full to relieve him.
If you think several times a year to clean with water then dry the front-engine filter and the air outlet filter, it will return it to you a hundredfold.
Finally, rid the accessories (brush, hoses) of hair, bristles and other curiosities which clog the device and tire it out prematurely.
