Crazy like a prophet

Sobriety underfoot

However, I was sure of holding on until the finish. That this gesture was within the reach of my right foot: not to exceed 110 km/h on the highway, upon returning from the All Saints’ holidays. With, in the back seat, my two daughters who had asked for nothing but whose faces encourage me to act for the climate.

Come on, one small step, just to show that we are a worthy parent! Going from 130 km to 110 km/h still means 20% fewer greenhouse gas emissions on a journey. Fuel savings. Less risk of accident.

Lengthening my journey? Between four and eight minutes per hour. Negligible, if we take the climate emergency seriously. So I watched the cars pass me one by one. Then ten by ten. Stoic, I kept the pedal planted on my ideal of sobriety.

It was after an hour that things started to go wrong. A feeling of solitude in the middle of the great rushing flow. The speedometer climbed to 120 km/h almost without thinking about it. If there had been several drivers lined up at 110 km/h, I would have stayed the course, that’s for sure!
