The three films to see at the cinema this fall
The animal kingdom, by Thomas Cailley, drama, fantasy, 2h08. In theaters October 4. From 16 years old.
François and his son Émile, 16, seek to save their wife and mother. Suffering from an illness gradually transforming her into an animal – like many human beings in the film – she is reported missing. Launched on the trail of this mutant woman in the heart of the Landes forest, father and son discover a wild nature, now sheltering beings affected by hybridization. “Faced with the current ecological emergency, I believe it is vital to invent new stories that explore our interactions with the rest of life. Not through the prism of inevitable collapse, or yet another postapocalyptic story, but by showing a vital, violent and creative impulse”, explained director Thomas Cailley (The Fighters) about this fiction presented at the last Cannes Film Festival. Opening avenues of reflection on our relationship with nature, this film is also a magnificent metaphor for adolescence. Bodily transformation, evolution of the relationship with the father and desire for emancipation: on the way to adulthood, young Émile will manage to accept himself while adapting to the world.
