Eight years after her canonization, on September 4, 2016, the enthusiasm around Mother Teresa remains intact. Not only has she become a universal icon of charity but she also leaves an important legacy behind her. Since her death, the congregation of the Missionaries of Charity, of which she is the founder, has opened 92 houses. Today there are nearly 700 homes in 136 countries.

In 2013, the United Nations even decided to establish an International Day of Charity which takes place on September 5, the anniversary of the disappearance of Mother Teresa.
