Back to school 2025: an exceptional vintage

Those we love, parents, the family find themselves at the heart of the French literary school year, with Amélie Nothomb, who tells the childhood of her mother, and Emmanuel Carrère, who evokes his in a novel to be published on September 4, 2025, while Anthony Passeon tells her father’s relationship (Jacky, Grasset) and that Léonor de Récondo, Laurent Mauvignier, Anne Berest or Franck Bouysse return to the figures of their grandparents.

Writers also echo our world upset by wars and the rise of extremes, such as Rachid Benzine, about Palestine, joined by her Anglo-Palestinian sister Isabella Hammad (Hamlet along the wall, Gallimard). They imagine futuristic worlds, governed by money and high-tech, where men try to make their way of freedom and humanity like Laurent Gaudé and Mathieu Belezi (Chaos hymns, Robert Laffont).

One year after the Pelicot case

Violence against women continue to irrigate many works. A test (Mazan, The Styx crossing, by Marion Dubreuil, globe) and a wide graphic story (Our business, From Louise Colcombet and Mathieu Palain, the iconoclast) are devoted to Gisèle Pelicot and male violence.

Haitian novelist Yanick Lahens tells black and Métis women doubly victims of slavery and men (Night passengers, Sabine Wespieser), while Nathacha Appanah questions feminicides (Night in the heart, Gallimard).

Other brilliant novels explore adolescence, discomfort and flight paths via imagination, nature or literature (Bear skin, de Grégory le Floch, threshold, or Paranoia de Lise Charles, POL).

Back to school is also marked by stylistic, sensitive and endearing masterpieces, such as that of Gaëlle Nohant and the new book of Quebecois Jean-François Beauchemin. Also come out of the first exceptional novels, in particular The Mandragores, by Marius Degardin.

On the foreigner, we find with pleasure world renowned feathers. The Spanish writer Javier Cercas, who accompanied Pope Francis in Mongolia, tells his journey and the exchanges with the Holy Father in The madman of God at the end of the world (Actes Sud), to find in a future issue.

Follow the American surge, always of high quality, with Joyce Maynard, Percival Everett, Tommy Orange, Jesmyn Ward, and the beautiful British wave with Ken Follett, William Boyd and Jonathan Coe, the Italians (Paolo Rumiz) and the authors of the East…
