Marie Antoinette

The affair of the queen’s necklace, a formidable scam which unfairly tarnished Marie Antoinette, has already caused a lot of ink to be spilled.

However, the form of “true novel” that Camille Pascal adopts gives a particular breath to her story. All the more so since the author, who always adapts his writing to the times, knew how, this time, to restrain it from too many baroque effects.

After a somewhat slow installation, the plot holds in suspense: the Countess of La Motte-Valois, a poor adventurer despite noble origins and a perfect actress, will fool the Cardinal de Rohan, a libertine but great chaplain of the kingdom, persuading him to play through the Queen for the purchase of a fabulous diamond necklace.

In the background, illuminating the context of the nearby Revolution, incredible characters gravitate. They are the representatives of a corrupt, nepotistic and over-indebted society which does not understand the scandal of the gap between the values it advocates and the existence it leads.

Camille Pascal has gone through tons of archives and recreates each dialogue on the spot. Closing the book, we see once again how reality exceeds fiction.
