Moringa identity card: a multifaceted tree

Espcentury described by the French naturalist Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck in 1785.

Common name: Nicknamed “the tree of life”, moringa has a name which comes from Tamil and which evokes its young twisted capsules. In Senegal, the plant is called neverdier, (adapted from English never die the tree that never dies). In English-speaking regions, it may also be referred to as benzolive, due to the oil extracted from its seeds.

Gender : Moringa.

Size : The tree can grow up to 10 to 12 m high. The diameter of the trunk, covered with a thick layer of cork, then reaches 45 cm.

Conservation : Native to India and Sri Lanka, this tree has acclimatized well to many other tropical areas.

Close-up on… The long, dry pods that the tree produces are filled with round, dark seeds which, when crushed into powder, can be used to clean up unsanitary waters. They cause the coagulation of impurities and germs, eliminating more than 90% of bacteria.
