Seen today with Pascal Redoutey, chromist at Le Pèlerin
“The work of a chromist consists in checking, the printing, that the colors and contrasts will be well rendered in the pages of the newspaper and that the photos will be as legible as possible. It has not fundamentally changed since the beginning of the 20th century, but the computerization of the manufacturing process has eliminated stages. Until the 2000s, we used “photogravure”. The pages were printed on films and the chroma was corrected using high-quality paper proofs. , called cromalins. Now, cromalins are exceptional and are only used, for example, for the cover of a Christmas issue with gilding. My daily work consists of correcting digital files of the pages from a computer, calibrated with so that the colors stay true to the original photos on the printed paper.”
