In the Loire, a former Chartreuse from the 13th century rewarded by the Heritage Foundation

It’s a little nugget of French heritage which has just been rewarded. In the heart of the Pilat Regional Natural Park, the Chartreuse of Sainte-Croix-en-Jarez is the only example, in France, of a monastery transformed into a village during the French Revolution. Founded in 1281 by Béatrice de la Tour, it is equipped with constructions of medieval urban architecture, partly rebuilt in the 17th century. A unique ensemble, among the “Most beautiful villages in France”, which deserves to be highlighted.

Collective mobilization to save an exceptional heritage

With 53% of the public votes, this small green and heritage village between Saint-Étienne and Lyon thus becomes the 6th winner of the Popular Patronage Prize. Launched in 2005, this prize rewards, each year, exemplary mobilizations carried out by small municipalities or associations.

Thanks to the fundraising carried out hand in hand by the municipality, the Park and the Safeguarding and Animation association of the Chartreuse of Sainte-Croix-en-Jarez, more than 42,000 euros in donations were collected as well. only 19,000 euros in sponsorships and various aid. That is 60,000 euros and more than 200 donors.

For its Public Prize, the Heritage Foundation invited Internet users, in February, to choose from two restoration projects. Facing the winner, the church of Albepierre-Bredons (Cantal) of the Friends of Bredons and its 2989 votes.

The Chartreuse de Sainte-Croix-en-Jarez will be awarded additional aid of €5,000.
