The Council of State validates the Church’s refusal to erase a name from the baptism register
The supreme administrative court rejected the complaint of a complainant who contested the refusal of the National Commission for Information Technology and Liberties to require the diocese of Angers (Maine-et-Loire) to withdraw its data of a personal nature. The Council of State notes that the registers are only accessible to interested parties and people working in the administration of Catholic worship.
On the other hand, these data make it possible to preserve the trace of the baptism, in the event that the person concerned reintegrates the Christian community and wishes to marry religiously, estimated the Council of State. However, in Belgium, on December 19, the bishopric of Ghent was required to remove a name from the baptismal register. The case could be brought before the Court of Justice of the European Union.”
