"The European electric car has no future"

“The European electric car has no future”

→ Roll in electric car reduces our CO2 emissions. But many motorists are not convinced by these vehicles which they find too expensive and whose time of autonomy between two recharges seems too short to them. However, in 2035, European citizens will no longer have the choice between thermal, hybrid or electric engine. Within the Union (EU), 100 % of cars sold must be electric models.

→ The latter represent 15.8 %* of sales, a figure lower than European objectives. Among them, a growing part is foreign. The two best -selling models in Europe remain the American Tesla. Chinese cars conquer a larger share of the European market each year, exceeding the 10 % mark for the first time in June.

→ Europe will win the battle of electricity When she succeeds in producing in mass at competitive prices. But getting into the transition is a risky bet for manufacturers. Chinese competition, doped for subsidies since the early 2000s, is ruthless. China has the minor resources and battery factories that are lacking in Europeans, dependent on Chinese and South Korean suppliers. In addition, on the old continent, demand in electric cars slows down, despite a good start in 2020.

→ The European Union is starting to measure the problem. In October 2024, she raised taxes on imported Chinese cars. Some countries, such as France, set up financial aid to encourage purchase. At the EU level, a bonus is granted, from October 1, for cars whose battery is European. In July, the European Commission for the first time agreed to support the emerging local sector by helping six European factories during the difficult first years of production. There remains a decisive uncertainty for investors: the transition to the electric car could be delayed under the pressure of automotive industrialists.

→ in the absence of a clear political line, support for its industry and more assertive financial incentives, The future of the European electric car is actually compromised. But it is not too late: everything will be played in the years to come.
