The Gospel of the August 24 Mass
No privileges, nothing but love
Christine Langmember of the Christian community of the Notre-Dame-des-Anges chapel (Paris VI °)
The Gospel does not definitely take us on paths with ease. Jesus says it clearly: the door is narrow! There are no privileges or acquired advantages. What Jesus calls into question is perhaps this attitude that would make us heirs by nature, without that imply that our hearts converting, again and again. This warning has been present in the Bible for a long time, since the Prophet Isaiah, already, evokes the announcement of the glory of God to “all nations, of all languages”.
The psalm of this day does not say anything else, when he calls “all peoples, all countries” to praise the Lord. We ourselves, to whom the good news has been transmitted -and this for generations -have been many members of all these nations, and not of an elected people. Are we aware of the grace of having benefited from this long transmission? Nothing is acquired by law, everything is proposed to us for love.
The challenge for each and each of us is good to respond, personally, humbly, to the call addressed to us. So, we will be able to recognize the salvation that God offers to all, and set out, following Christ, to live with it and announce it in our turn.
