“The Magnificat of France”, published on November 11, 1918 in Le Pèlerin

The French felt my soul in their souls, I sing with them the Lord, God saves me on this day: He inspires me, He ignites me, And I tremble with happiness. The Lord has deigned to cast a look of kindness on his humble servant: and now the world boasts of my full happiness. He used me for his admirable work, The Mighty in the Name is holy; And his mercy is always helpful to the weakness that fears him. His arm suddenly broke the crowns, Where so much pride was set: He dispossessed the princes of their thrones;

He picked up the little ones. Blessed are those who hunger for righteousness and wisdom, He has provided them with every good thing. Woe to those who trusted in their riches, He has put their treasures to nothing. He has not forgotten his pact of alliance With the France of Clovis: He guided my steps, seconded my valor. The French remain his sons. He has never ceased to be faithful to his promises of help: My oaths of yesteryear, – I renew them to him, I will always be his France!

November 11, 1918. Abbot Henri-Charles Thuillier, priest of Neuve-Lyre, in Pèlerin.
