in New York, parishes defy Trump’s policies

More than half a million: this is the number of people forcibly deported from the United States in 2025, according to official statistics. Since his return to the head of the world’s leading power, Donald Trump has pursued a particularly restrictive migration policy.

The millions of migrants who entered the United States illegally now live in fear of arrest, which would take them first to one of the overcrowded and often unsanitary detention centers, then out of the United States territory – not always to their country of origin.

While more than 3.5 million people likely to be deported still fear that their case will be examined by the courts – the only summons allowing the police to locate and arrest them without delay – a new tragedy occurred on January 7 in Minneapolis (Minnesota), where a 37-year-old woman was killed by anti-immigration police.

Faced with the determination of the American administration, parishes and Church networks are organizing to come to the aid of these undocumented immigrants and their families, supporting them in their legal procedures, as well as in everyday trials.
