the Church in full ecological awareness
The movement was born a few years ago, in major North American Catholic and Protestant universities which manage very significant financial funds. Challenged by students who are increasingly aware of the coherence between speeches and actions, managers have had to review their investment policy to avoid supporting, directly or indirectly, companies linked in particular to the exploitation of energies fossils. Since then, this movement has grown. In France, recently, it was the Scouts and Guides of France who directly questioned BNP, their bank, and its policy of supporting fossil energy industries.
Other movements have since taken over, demanding that the financial assets of the Church stop being invested in these polluting industries. In dioceses, whose financial resources often remain quite limited, awareness is also growing. During a recent conference in Nantes on the theme “Our money and the climate”, the diocesan treasurer announced that the diocese was committed to “gradually reducing the share of its investments” in these toxic funds. In Isère, diocesan officials have created two specific investment funds, with specifications excluding fossil fuels. It is now urgent for everyone to accelerate this awareness.
