Five and a half years after being saved from the fire, the Holy Crown of Thorns returned to the cathedral this Friday, December 13.

30 canons, 8 chaplains from the diocese of Paris, 430 people from the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem including 200 knights accompany him in procession towards the altar.

After the ceremony of ostension and veneration, presided over by Mgr Laurent Ulrich, the Archbishop placed the Crown in its new reliquary shrine installed in the axial chapel of the cathedral.

France has had custody of it since 1239. In 1806, this relic was entrusted to the chapter of canons, until 1923, when the Archbishop of Paris, restoring an ancient use, granted the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher custody of the relics of the Passion when they are presented for veneration. These then constitute, in a way, their close guard.
