Two exhibitions pay tribute to the big women painters

“Les Petites Manet”

Julie Manet is not only niece and daughter of famous painters (Édouard Manet and Berthe Morisot). She is also an artist. Just like his cousins, Jeannie and Paule Gobillard. It is the singular journey of these three women that relates to the Franciscans, in Deauville (Calvados), an exhibition presenting nearly 90 works – half is signed by them, the other by illustrious family friends: Renoir, Degas…

Writings, photos and personal objects complete the hanging. In 1895, Julie was 16 years old. She lost her father three years ago. When her mother dies, she follows her last advice and welcomed her two cousins in the family home, also recently orphans. For five years, the trio lived there and created side by side. Jeannie is a musician. Paule painted, like Julie, who at the end of 1896 confides to her newspaper: “I am happy when I paint a lot. I love this art that is due to those I loved and are no longer. »»

The common life ended with weddings, in May 1900, of Jeannie with the poet Paul Valéry and Julie with the painter Ernest Rouart. Paule, she ardently resumes her brushes. Upstairs of the Franciscans, devoted to this period, its scenes of daily life and its still lifes warm the Parma walls. The set puts mouth water because of Julie and Paule’s work, many remains to be discovered.

Signed Artemisia

Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1656) was undoubtedly the most important painter of the 17th century. Educated in Rome (Italy), she quickly freed herself from her father, travel, is inspired by the schools of the Italian cities in which she works, and reaches the rank of courtyard, paid more than many male artists.

Influence of Caravaggio for “Clear-Oscurs”, “cinematographic” framing of biblical scenes, donation for expressive portraits and self-portraits, refined rendering of fabrics and jewelry … This exhibition highlights the specificity of its talent.

Faced with such a strong work, we admire the artist who, having undergone rape and an unfair trial in his youth, has been able to rebuild and assert himself. The greatest injustice being that the history of art then forgot it for almost three centuries!
