Heatwave in France: towards peaks of 50°C?
This is the question many of us are asking ourselves after the early heatwave in May. Will global warming burn our skin, then that of our children? According to Météo France, by the end of the century, if we stay on the current trajectory, the highest temperatures will be, on average, 40°C in France, with heat peaks reaching 50°C in some regions. Do we really realize what that means?
Convinced that “the desire for change is born from a sensory emotion”, explorer Christian Clot created the Climate Sense project: a mobile container which allows you to experience for half an hour the physical and cognitive consequences of exposure to 50°C in the shade. Difficulty moving, loss of concentration… When leaving, more than half of the participants say they want to take action. Happy again!
I dare to hope that the crazy heat of May will have the same effect: that it will awaken this area of consciousness which makes us want to be more active citizens to demand public policies that meet the challenge. Certainly, much of the warming is now inevitable. But as climatologists seek to tell us, every tenth of a degree avoided represents millions of lives saved.
