Breton is now available in Google Translate

“Here are the Breton ones!” (Yes to the Breton language in Breton). This title of the Breton promotion campaign is more than ever trumpeted, not without pride, by Breton speakers. Google Translate has announced that the Breton language is included, along with Occitan, among the 110 new languages and dialects available since Thursday, June 27, 2024.

The search engine’s free service almost doubles the existing offer, which already included Corsican and Basque. The multilingual translator, launched online in April 2006, has some 500 million daily users and 243 languages available.

Defined selection criteria

The choice of new languages offered by Google Translate is made according to three criteria : the number of requests received, speakers and the amount of data available to train the artificial intelligence.

With more than 200,000 speakers, Breton, which belongs to the Celtic language family, relies more than ever on transmission to continue to live. Today, this is particularly true in Diwan schools. In 2023, these immersion courses brought together 4,014 students spread across 47 schools, 6 middle schools and 2 high schools.
