Who are the 21 new cardinals chosen by Pope Francis?
At the end of the Angelus prayer this Sunday, October 6, Pope Francis announced a consistory for December 8, and named the 21 new cardinals.
“Their origin reflects the universality of the Church, which continues to announce the merciful love of God to all men,” Francis justified. Among them, Mgr Jean-Paul Vesco, 62 years old, archbishop of Algiers, and Brother Timothy Radcliffe, 79 years old, two religious whom Le Pèlerin met in 2024.
Latin America, Jorge Bergoglio’s continent of origin, gives five new cardinals to the Catholic Church. Four Italians will receive the red bar. Asia is represented by five prelates, including the archbishop of Teheeran-Isfahan (Iran), Joseph Mathieu, a conventual Franciscan originally from Belgium.
